Last Night I Heard Rustling in the Bushes
and I thought it was you.
I saw headlights on the mountain wink
and fade, wink and fade and wink away
and I thought it was you.
I heard the moon dragging its horn
from California to Oregon
to the jurisdiction of sea
and I thought it was you.
Someone laughed in the distance
after some long party
the way you do, throaty
with song inferred in the rise and fall
and I thought it was you.
I picked up a seismic shift
in the trees heavy with Spring
heavy with unkempt overnight ghosts
and I thought it was you.
A shadow passed across
my sleep and passed again
when I woke up
a flash of leg, onyx eyes, a sigh like an apple
rendering its flesh to the mouth
in sacrifice, a shadow
frayed with the trials
of our long-distance dreams
and I thought it was you.
I stood in the night, in the embrace
of the long hallucination of night
deadly and true
because I thought it was you.
